Are you considering a breast enlargement procedure?

A woman’s bosom has long been a symbol of beauty and femininity with the shape, symmetry, and size of the breasts playing a unique role in every woman’s self-perception.

Breast augmentation is about more than simply enlarging the breasts; it is a very effective surgery, suitable for women with insufficiently developed breasts or when the mammary gland system is shedding and the skin is slightly loose, as may be the case after breast feeding or significant weight loss.

The age limit for breast augmentation is generally 18 years, after the mammary glands are fully developed. It is recommended (but not required) that breast augmentation only be performed when a woman does not plan to get pregnant any more, as pregnancy and breast feeding result in changes of volume, producing a negative effect on the outcome of the surgery. Implants will not influence pregnancy in any way and will not expose the fetus to any danger. It should be noted that a number of patients were able to breast-feed normally after a breast augmentation although complications may occur due to insufficient lactation.

Breast Augmentation Surgery

Surgery planning begins with an overall evaluation to ensure you are healthy enough for the procedure. This evaluation minimizes possible surgical risks. A complete history of all health disorders, medications, and allergies will be considered in pre-operative screening prior to surgery. While we cover the entire process in its entirety during your consultations the following is a brief explanation of what to expect during and after your procedure:

  • General Anesthetic
Breast augmentation is an outpatient procedure, performed under deep sedation by a certified nurse anesthetist or certified nurse practitioner and takes approximately 1-1.5 hours. An incision, approximately 4 to 5cm long, may be made in the crease of the underside of the breast, the armpit or lower edge of the areola.
  • Placement of Implants
Once the incision is made, the surgeon will create a pocket for the implant to lie in. This may be either beneath the muscle or beneath the breast tissue. The size and shape of your implants will ultimately determine the placement.
  • Closing Your Incisions
Following the surgery you will have stitches (these will be dissolvable) in place, covered with a dressing and a post-surgical bra. After one week the bra may be replaced by a standard sports bra. Normal bras and bathing suits may be worn after approximately two weeks.
  • Recovery
Sleep or rest with your head slightly elevated, avoiding sleeping on your side. Keep your arms close to your body, and avoid lifting weights until allowed by your surgeon. Do not drive for at least 2 days after your surgery, and do not exercise until approved by your surgeon usually 4-6 weeks.

Should You Consider Breast Augmentation?
